James'brief life in Ipswich Marys'courage

James McLucas and his wife Mary, sister of Sarah Ann, came to Brisbane on the ship "Rockliff" arriving on the 28th July 1863. Fellow passengers were John and James' younger brother Joseph, and William Watson, Nephew of Mary and Sarah Ann. On the 24th October 1863 Mary gave birth to a son, William.

The electoral roll for Queensland in 1864/1865 showed James living at Purga just outside of Ipswich. The following year James purchased the property at Purga and died of Typus Fever on the 25th May 1866. His grave like his brother Johns' is unknown.

Mary and William battled on in Ipswich for a number of years. Then with a sense of adventure and courage she decided to head north to the Bundaberg area. They boarded a schooner and travelled up the Burnett River, finally disembarking at Sharon. From there they journeyed by foot through the bush and settled in Gooburrum amongst the Kanakas.

Through hard work and adapting to her new surroundings, Mary won the respect and admiration of the Kanakas to the point where they referred to her as the White Queen. Later Mary moved closer to Bundaberg so William could attend the new School at North Bundaberg.

Marys' hard life took its toll and on the 20th July 1879 Mary passed away and was buried on her Nephew,William Watsons' property "Carnamoy" at Splitters Creek, North Of Bundaberg. William was then raised by the Watsons and when he was old enough was endentured as a Blacksmith & Wheelwright by William Watson.
