This history is assembled from official records like Electoral Rolls, BDM Certificates and archive records.

Joseph was a single man of 19 years when he arrived on the Rockliff in 1863. Much of his story is built around official records. He was in Ipswich until 1871. He then moved to Quart Pot Creek(now Stanthorpe) in 1872 where he was granted mining leases. Quart Pot Creek was the site of a rich tin discovery. In 1873 he married another Irish Immigrant, Margaret Davidson, in Stanthorpe. The couple moved to Amosfield, 14 Km from Stanthorpe, but in New South Wales. Their first three children were born in Amosfield in 1874, 1876 and 1877. From 1878 until his death in 1892 Joseph and Margaret resided at Quart Pot Creek. Cemetery records list his occupation as Miner. Margaret and the family moved to Silver Spur which had a large copper mine of the same name. At least two of her sons worked at this mine. Margaret died in 1904 and was interred at Silver Spur. Her death certificate lists her occupation as a Nurse. In 1946 Margaret was re-interred at Stanthorpe with Joseph
